AKMH™ Hygienic Design Guide

Hygienic Design

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is an agency of the United States Department of Health and

Human Services.

The FDA is responsible for protecting and promoting public health through the regulation and

supervision of food safety, vaccines, biopharmaceuticals, blood transfusions, medical devices and other

products.

The “European Hygienic Engineering and Design Group” (EHEDG) is a European-based non-government

organization devoted to the advancement of hygienic design and food engineering. European legislation

requires that handling, preparation, processing, packaging, etc. of food is done hygienically, with hygienic

machinery in hygienic premises (the food hygiene directive, the machine directive and the food contact

materials directive).
