ABB Why Power System Stabilizer Standalone (PSS SA)

Why Power System Stabilizer Standalone (PSS SA)

Power system stabilizers (PSS) are commonly used to damp various types of oscillation modes,

as from interarea oscillations in large transmission networks to local oscillation modes of synchronous

generating units. This is done by adding a stabilizing signal to the voltage regulator of the existing

excitation systems.

The comprehensive and flexible solution: ABB’s UNITROL® 6000

Power System Stabilizer Standalone

Extend the life cycle of your current excitation system by adding functionality, fast and simple

• For any excitation brand – Indirect or Static excitation systems

• Extending the life cycle of your current system and enabling compliance with today’s complex grid code

regulations

• Full Power System Stabilizer (PSS) functionalities according latest IEEE421.5 standards (PSS 2A/2B/2C

or 4B/4C)

The challenge

Grid codes are constantly changing due to the new and unprecedented network developments.

Therefore, installed plant equipment requires to be upgraded/replaced to comply with the network

regulations which leads to increased extended outages and costs.

PSS SA is a cost-effective solution to be compliant immediately.

ABB helps making hydrogen production robust

ABB helps making hydrogen production

robust, simple and cost efficient  by offering solutions that successfully

address the challenge of water electrolysis

Every plant is unique, and so are our customers

and their needs for electrification.

Whether you want to produce hydrogen for re

sale, for on- or off-site industrial utilization, as a

reserve for electricity generation or you are sup

porting customers in building such plants – get

ting ABB on board ensures an optimal electrical

subsystem. We take a holistic approach to system

design, so that all possible eventualities are fully

considered. The solution we propose for you is

tailor made to meet your requirements and based

on close collaboration with you as our client. We

always strive for a perfect understanding of your

needs, your process and the surrounding condi

tions to configure the optimum solution, which

you can trust 100%.

Ammonia:  Direct use for fertilizer production

Synfuels:  Replacement in combustion engines

Industry:  Chemical, steel, cement and others

Transport:  Fuel for cars, rail aviation & ships

Power:  Energy storage for reconversion

Refining: High quality fuels and feedstock

Replacing fossil-based production

Hydrogen today is mainly produced by natural gas reforming

or coal gasification¹. Carbon capture may provide an interim

solution to prevent the release of CO₂ to the environment.

But only electrolytic production of H₂ allows to eventually

eliminate fossil fuels from the energy value chain – and

thereby full control of carbon emission and a steady

pathway to a sustainable future.

Electrolysis will move up to scale

The hydrogen council states that the annual demand for

hydrogen could increase tenfold by 2050. This will require

centralized gigawatt industrial production facilities that

leverage economies of scale. Hundreds of megawatts or

gigawatts of power per plant pose different challenges com

pared to existing installations. With our wealth of experi

ence in industrial electrolysis, ABB is the perfect partner to

expand the boundaries of H₂ production.
