X20 I/O System overview

High-speed precision of open and closed loop

control for machines and systems – at an attrac

tive price. B&R eliminates this seeming contra

diction with the high degree of scalability of their

control systems. This makes it possible for B&R to

cover all requirements with a single platform – from

the smallest controllers all the way up to CNC, ro

botics and process control applications. What‘s

more, this platform can be programmed and con

figured – regardless of the hardware being used –

with Automation Studio. This compatibility reduces

development costs while at the same time protec

ting investments made throughout the entire life

cycle of the machine.

off at the time the coated module is switched on. This is permitted to be as low as -40°C. During operation, the

conditions as specified in the technical data continue to apply.

Information:

It is important to absolutely ensure that there is no forced cooling by air currents in a closed control

cabinet, for example using a fan or ventilation slots.

B&R X20cBC0087 Bus controller

General information

Established in 1979. the Modbus protocol has approved the use of Ethernet with both Modbus TCP and Mod

bus/UDP. Today, Modbus TCP is an open Internet draft standard introduced by Schneider Automation to the In

ternet Engineering Task Force (IETF), the organization responsible for Internet standardization. The Modbus ser

vices and object model have been preserved since the original version and left unchanged for use with the TCP/

IP transmission medium.

Modbus/UDP differs from Modbus TCP in that it uses connectionless communication via UDP/IP. The advantages

of faster and easier communication with UDP/IP also brings with it the disadvantage of requiring error detection

and correction in the application layer.

This bus controller makes it possible to connect X2X Link I/O nodes to Modbus via Ethernet. The bus controller

can be operated on B&R controllers through the use of Automation Studio or on third-party systems with Modbus

TCP or -UDP master functionality.

• Fieldbus: Modbus/TCP, Modbus/UDP

• I/O configuration via the fieldbus

• DHCP-capable

• Bootp-capable

• Integrated double switch for efficient cabling

• Configurable I/O cycle (0.5 to 4 ms)

• Response time: <1 to 8 ms (depending on the load on the integrated switch)

• Validity check for command sequences before execution

B&R X20cBC0083 X20 Bus Controller

General information

The bus controller makes it possible to connect X2X Link I/O nodes to POWERLINK. It is also possible to operate

the X2X Link cycle synchronously 1:1 or synchronous to POWERLINK using a prescaler.

POWERLINK is a standard protocol for Fast Ethernet with hard real-time properties. The Ethernet POWERLINK

Standardization Group (EPSG) ensures that the standard remains open and is continually developed.

• POWERLINK

• I/O configuration and Firmware update via the fieldbus

• Integrated hub for efficient cabling

B&R X20cBC0043-10 Coated modules

Information:

With multifunction modules, the bus controller supports only the default function model in the event

of automatic configuration by the bus controller (see the respective module description).

Automation Studio V4.3 or later can be used to easily create configuration files (e.g. DCF files). All

other function models are also supported by transferring configuration data to the bus controller (e.g.

via the master environment with an SDO download).

The evaluation license is permitted to be used to create complete configurations for fieldbus bus con

trollers at no cost.

B&R X20cBC0043-10 Bus controller CANopen slave

General information

Controller Area Network (CAN) is widespread in automation technology. CAN topology is based on a line structure

and uses twisted wire pairs for data transfer. CANopen is a higher-layer protocol based on CAN. The standardized

protocol offers very flexible configuration options.

This bus controller makes it possible to connect up to 253 X2X Link I/O modules to CANopen. A transition between

IP20 and IP67 protection is possible by directly connecting X20. X67 or XV modules to one another at distances of

up to 100 m each across control cabinet boundaries as required. All CANopen operating modes such as synchro

nous, event and polling are supported as well as PDO linking, life/node guarding, heartbeat, emergency objects

B&R Protected against harsh environmental conditions – Coated X20 system

Protected against harsh environmental conditions – Coated X20 system

With the X20c series, B&R is setting new standards for protection against

harsh environmental conditions. These variants of the modular X20

distributed controller and I/O product line are protected against condensation

and corrosive gases by a coating on the electronics module.

These modules are even suitable for use in adverse atmospheric conditions.

The coating on the electronics module protects the components and circuit

board from the effects of condensation and corrosive gases. The effectiveness

of protection against condensation is checked using the test specified in BMW

GS 95011-4. and protection against corrosive gases using the 4-part corrosive

gas tests specified in EN 60068-2-60. test method 4. The tests are completed

both in the company testing lab, which is accredited in accordance with EN

ISO/IEC 17025:2007. and at certified external testing facilities.

There, the products undergo further testing to check their durability – even

beyond standard requirements.

Independent of operating conditions

The X20 family with coated circuit boards is completely compatible with existing

X20 models with respect to functionality. Using a unique module ID, the application

software can differentiate these devices from standard models.

With the introduction of this line, B&R has proven for the third time in rapid succession

– after the general expansion of the operating temperature range to -25 to +60°C

and certification for maritime applications from Germanischer Lloyd (GL)

– that they are dedicated to increasing their customers’ return on investment by

increasing the service life of the X20 system regardless of environmental conditions.
