ABB REB611 Busbar Protection Relay

DESCRIPTION

The REB611 is a specialized busbar protective relay for split-phase short-circuit protection, control and monitoring of single busbars.

The REB611 is suitable for high impedance based applications in utility substations and industrial power systems.

In addition, the relay can be used in restricted earth fault and residual earth fault applications to protect generators, motors, transformers and reactors.

The 611 series relays fully support the IEC 61850 standard for communication and interoperability of substation automation equipment.

This includes fast GOOSE (Generic Object Oriented Substation Event) messaging, and can now also benefit from the extended interoperability offered by version 2 of the standard.

The relays further support the Parallel Redundancy Protocol (PRP) and the High Availability Seamless Redundancy Protocol (HSR).

The 611 series relays can use both IEC 61850 and Modbus® communication protocols.

The REB611 is a member of the ABB Relion® product family and part of the 611 protection and control product family.

The 611 series relays are characterized by a compact and withdrawable unit design.

The 611 series offers simplified yet powerful functionality for most applications. After entering the application-specific parameter set, the installed relay is ready for operation.

The IEC 61850 standard further increases communication capabilities and interoperability between substation automation equipment, adding flexibility and value for end users and electrical system manufacturers.

ABB REX610 Protection and control functions

Digital relays are based on the use of microprocessors. The first digital relay was released in 1985.

One of the major differences between traditional electromechanical relays and static relays is the way the relays are wired.

Electromechanical and static relays have fixed wiring and are set to manual.

Digital relays, on the other hand, are programmable relays whose characteristics and behavior can be programmed. Most digital relays are also multifunctional.

Power Supplies

The SD83x and SD85x Power Supply Units are designed to meet all the applicable electrical safety

data stated by the EN 50178 harmonized European

Standard Publication and the additional safety and

function data required by EN 61131-2 and UL 508.

The secondary output circuitry is accepted for SELV

or PELV applications.

They are switch-mode Power Supply Units which

convert the mains voltage to 24 volts d.c. These

power supplies can be utilized for non-redundant

and redundant applications. Redundant applications

require diode voting units SS823 or SS832.

With the type SD83x series Power Supply Units,

there is no requirement for the installation of a

mains filter. They provide a soft start feature; power-on of an SD83x will not trip fuses or earth-fault

circuit breakers. The SD822Z is also G3 compliant.

ABB High performance HMI

Leading paths to greater awareness, faster response and better decisions

Handling the unplanned outages has become the number-one priority for many companies today. On an average, operators deal with thousands of alarms per day. Hence, they should face no more than two alarms per 10-minute period but alarm overload distracts the operators and often causes unplanned downtime.

For maximum plant performance, high performance HMI and advanced alarm management helps to improve the operator’s tools and work environment. An ABB case study reveals savings of more than $800.000 from upgrading to a high performance HMI.

Importance of HMI

In control rooms of old, the number of alarms was limited by the amount of space on the control room panel board and the cost of wiring equipment from the production area to the board.

Annunciators, indicators and switches (to acknowledge and clear a resolved alarm) had to be essential to justify a place on the panel. If a new alarm was needed, an existing alarm would usually have to  make way.

This began to change with digital signals and the distributed control system (DCS) in the 1980s. Panel boards were replaced by monitors and servers, and signals were transmitted from plant equipment to computer processors, where the signals were turned into actionable information. But the alarms were overloading the control room and terms such as flooding, nuisance, chattering, fleeting and stale were coined to describe them and their effect on the operators.
